Below are some options I’ve found for headphones that will block out sound, and allow you to listen to audio at the same time. Protecting your ears from fatigue and possible hearing loss., they reduce the amount of volume going to your ears which allows you to monitor your music at a much lower level. It’s important to note that these headphones reduce sound by muffling the volume and do not offer any noise cancelling properties. (Note: prices are approximate and I've linked the options to reputable websites where you can purchase these and find out more information about them - links should open in a new window)
Sound Reduction: 29db
$229.95
Sound Reduction: 29db
$119.95
Sound Reduction: 29db
$97.99
note: I’ve used these for years, and have noticed that the sound dampening potential of the headphones decrease over time. These also have a volume knob hardwired onto the headphones, which I have found convenient and useful.
Sound Reduction: 25db
$89.95
Vic Firth Stereo Isolation Headphones
Sound Reduction: 24db
$50.50
Howard Leight Noise Blocking Earmuff
Sound Reduction: 25db
$22.65
The headphone options listed below are more affordable, however, please be aware they do not have the option to monitor music, as they only provide hearing protection.
Vic Firth Drummer’s Headphones
Sound Reduction: 25db
$22.85
Sound Reduction: 22db
$22.95
You can also find non-percussion related hearing protection. I found the following non-percussion related items while doing a quick search on Amazon.com. I frequently tell parents of my drum students to look for the “gun muffling” type headphones you can find at sporting goods stores as they will be a good option as well.
Sound Reduction: 29db
$21.49
Note: These appear to be the same “base” headphones as the ones used for the Ultraphones (see above). However these only provide hearing protection.
Sound Reducton: 33db
$20.95
Note: Like the Peltor’s above, these only provide hearing protection.
And for those of us listening to the practicing or performing drummer, I suggest wearing hearing protection as well. Here are some options as well, though I purchase mine usually at a local pharmacy or supermarket. Also it should be noted that the sound reduction properties of these earplugs vary depending on how well they fit into your ear canal.
$6.56
$5.95
